The Star Wars franchise has two continuities, each with a degree of overlapping characters and stories, but the Legends continuity proves that it understands Luke Skywalker perfectly following the tragic death of Chewbacca. As part of the original Star Wars trilogy’s ensemble of protagonists, Luke is one of the franchise’s most important characters, though canon and Legends each have different interpretations of the iconic Jedi hero outside of his original trilogy appearances. While a case can be made for the merits of both iterations, the Luke Skywalker of the Legends continuity is more closely aligned with his characterization in the original films.
Before being rebranded as the Legends alternate timeline, the Expanded Universe was the Star Wars franchise’s officially-sanctioned continuity, and its many creative minds went to great lengths to keep its material consistent with each other and the films while continuing the stories of characters like Luke and Chewbacca. In the post-2014 canon, Luke Skywalker in particular has been the subject of controversy, thanks to a divisive sequel trilogy character arc that can be interpreted as inconsistent with his original trilogy characterization. The Legends version of Luke has a fair share of criticism as well, with some perceiving him as being defined by his ever-growing strength in the Force or not being consistently written, but this isn’t quite the case.
