Obi-Wan Kenobi nearly included a fight between Obi-Wan and an adult Luke Skywalker, which could have had an even more emotional impact than Obi-Wan’s rematch with Anakin Skywalker as Darth Vader. Set ten years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi focused on the titular character’s emotional journey as he rescued a young Princess Leia and faced his past failures. This ended in a climactic battle between Obi-Wan and Vader, which Obi-Wan won. Although Obi-Wan still could not kill his former apprentice, he was able to move forward and begin following the Jedi way again after the duel.
However,Obi-Wan Kenobi almost included a completely different lightsaber duel. In an interview, writer Stuart Beattie, who was involved with Obi-Wan Kenobi when it was still planned as a movie, explained that Obi-Wan was originally going to fight Luke. In Beattie’s storyline, Obi-Wan found a group of refugees who followed the Force. At one of their shrines, Obi-Wan had a vision, seeing Luke as an adult who had fallen to the dark side on Mustafar – just like his father. Forced to fight, Obi-Wan nearly died by Luke’s hand before snapping out of the vision. Deeply shaken, Obi-Wan realized that this was a vision of the future if he continued to try to train Luke by force and place all of his guilt on him. To prevent Luke from turning to the dark side, Obi-Wan had to let go of the past.
