Overwatch 2 is bringing back Quick Play: Hacked with Double Trouble – a game mode that removes the one hero limitation on each team. Players can expect to see this new gameplay experiment sometime before Overwatch 2 Season 9 ends in early April.
Quick Play: Hacked is a new experimental mode that Overwatch 2 introduced in January. Its first iteration, called Quicker Play, sped up the game by increasing capture and Push bot speeds while decreasing some game mode durations and respawn times.
Now, Quick Play: Hacked is coming back to the game again, but with a new twist this time. In a recent Overwatch 2 Director’s Take, game director Aaron Keller revealed the next Quick Play: Hacked would be taking place later this season. Called Double Trouble, this game mode removes the duplicate hero restriction on each team in Role Queue, allowing both DPS or Support players to choose the same character. The experimental game mode doesn’t have a date yet, but fans can expect it to happen before Overwatch 2 Season 9 ends on or around April 7.
The hero limit is something that was added to the game early on in the original Overwatch’s lifespan. Before then, Overwatch did not have Role Queue, and teams had six players, meaning each side could field up to six copies of the same hero. Keller even pointed out that the first Overwatch internal tournament was actually won by a team of five Winstons and one Support – a strategy he affectionately referred to as “Quinston.”
Overwatch 2 is currently implementing some of the changes from Quicker Play into the base game, with faster bots and shorter game times in Push, as well as a speed boost in Flashpoint. It is doubtful that Overwatch 2 will ever remove the one-hero limitation in Role Queue permanently, but it will no doubt be able to learn some valuable info during Double Trouble.
