A character in could actually be poised to subvert one of the franchise’s longest traditions. titles feature many recurring elements, from game mechanics to characters and even plot points. However, this isn't to say that the series cannot change even these points of commonality on occasion, and could be setting up one such change.
One common thread throughout is its recurring characters. Not just main characters like Link and Zelda, but also more minor figures like the traveling merchant Beedle can be found in many titles. is no different in this regard, perhaps even doubly so, considering it is a direct sequel to , and so features many familiar faces across Hyrule. However, while such characters typically fall into the same roles over and over again, the next game could change that completely.
Impa is a major figure in both the Sheikah clan and as a whole, having appeared in a multitude of games. Unlike Link, her appearance has varied wildly over time, but she is always a close ally of Princess Zelda. Moreover, since, Impa has always explicitly been a Sheikah, but her role can still vary between being a warrior in her own right and acting as an elderly advisor. and ’s Impa is undoubtedly the latter, but her granddaughter Paya could be about to shake up the formula by replacing her.
In, Paya is revealed to have taken over as Chief of the Sheikah and leader of Kakariko village, leaving Impa free to investigate the Glyphs that have appeared across Hyrule. In other words, Impa has retired from her age-old role, installing Paya in her place. Although the younger Sheikah has only a minor role in, the future could see Paya’s donning of the Chief’s hat gain much greater significance. It is entirely possible that, in line with her taking over from Impa in, the next game could have Paya acting in Impa’s typical advisory role.
