Batman Beyond the White Knight is the latest entry in writer/artist Sean Murphy’s White Knight universe, which kicked off with Batman: The White Knight. The mini-series, acclaimed by critics and fans alike, presented a skewered take on the Batman mythos, flipping the script on the Batman/Joker dynamic. A follow-up mini-series, Curse of the White Knight, saw the Dark Knight take on Azrael. At its conclusion, Bruce Wayne realized that Batman had failed in his mission to save Gotham, and decided to turn himself in to the authorities, donating his vast fortune to the city to help fund social betterment programs. However, as seen in the first issue of Batman Beyond the White Knight, readers saw the money was co-opted by Derek Powers, who channeled it into creating a paramilitary law enforcement agency, independent of the Gotham PD, called the GTO—and its led by Dick Grayson.
