Even Newegg is jumping on the ChatGPT bandwagon. The electronics retailer is now integrating the AI-powered chatbot into its website for tasks like recommending PC desktop builds.
The tool is available via a new beta search function on Newegg’s PC Builder tool(Opens in a new window). Simply type in the kind of PC you’d like, and ChatGPT will recommend a desktop build that fits your request. Or at least, that’s how the function is supposed to work.
We tried the tool on Monday, but it only gave us the wrong answers. We asked Newegg’s PC Builder to recommend several affordable PC builds under $1,000. But the tool only gave us desktop builds over $1,300.
We also asked the tool to help us build an affordable PC for Resident Evil 4 (Remake), which has relatively low system requirements(Opens in a new window). However, Newegg’s ChatGPT integration seemed to only give us a random $1,559 PC build containing 32GB of RAM, with no justification for any of the specs.
For now, Newegg would only say the tool is still in beta. The company also pointed out that a user can simply select the “$600 to $1,000” tab under the search bar to produce more affordable results. Clicking the tab will generate a text prompt ChatGPT seems to better comprehend.
Still, Newegg ChatGPT won't say why one PC build is better than another. We also asked it to build us the "best gaming PC money can buy." The result, ironically, gave us a low- and mid-range PC, suggesting the ChatGPT integration couldn't quite understand our request.
