All signs continue to point to the handheld gaming space growing increasingly crowded in the years to come. Microsoft recently confirmed that it had started working on a portable Xbox, while a recent report claimed that Sony, too, was in the early stages of developing a handheld device capable of natively running PS5 games. Now, that is being corroborated in a separate report.
The aforementioned claimed, originally made in a Bloomberg report, were recently discussed in a Digital Foundry video, with senior staff writer John Linneman claiming that he had heard similar details about a PlayStation handheld earlier in the year as well.
“What’s interesting about this is we actually heard about this handheld some months ago from a couple of sources specifically,” he said (transcription via VGC). “So, we’re not in the business of leaking things, but it’s interesting that this finally sort of started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record about this existing.”
Linneman went on to claim that the handheld was seemingly even further out from launch than he had been led to believe. Bloomberg’s aforementioned report claimed that the device was still several years away from release, which would mean it may be a while yet before we hear any official details. That, of course, is assuming that a new PlayStation handheld is indeed something that Sony has in the works- which we seem to have growing evidence for every day.
