New and movies are seemingly in the works at Warner Bros.
According to a recent report from Deadline, Warner Bros. is looking to inject some life into two 1980s franchises, The Goonies and Gremlins, at some point in the not-too-distant future.
“Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus, and a Goonies treatment,” the article states.
No further details are available at this time. No timeline has been given and it’s unclear if Columbus will also be involved in the Goonies project.
Directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies was released in 1985. Featuring a screenplay by Columbus, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, the adventure movie stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, Kerri Green, and more.
There have been a number of attempts and rumored continuations or remakes of The Goonies; however, none of them have ever gotten off the ground.
Gremlins, meanwhile, was released in 1984. That comedy horror movie was directed by Joe Dante, while the screenplay was written by Columbus. It stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, and Frances Lee McCain, while Howie Mandel provided the voice of Gizmo.
Gremlins received a 1990 sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, that was once again directed by Dante. Charles S. Haas wrote the screenplay for The New Batch, while saw Galligan, Cates, and Mandel reprise their roles.
Additionally, Max launched an animated Gremlins series in May 2023 that serves as a prequel to the 1984 movie. Dante is a consulting producer on the show, which has run for two seasons — the first of which is called Gremlins: Secrets of the Hogwai, while the second season is called Gremlins: The Wild Batch.
