In recent history, Mortal Kombat has been fantastic at elongating the traditional fighting game experience. A core component of that in the last several releases has been the Krypt, an area where you’re able to spend in-game currency on alternative outfits, costume colours, artwork, and more. But despite being very popular with fans, series bigwig Ed Boon has teased that his team is cooking something different for Mortal Kombat 1.
“We have a whole new system [for unlocks],” he told the PS Blog. “I can tell you it’s not the Krypt. But we’re gonna have a whole new system for unlocks.”
It’ll be interesting to see what it’s cooked up. In the most recent Mortal Kombat 11, the Krypt was a fully explorable 3D space with a map that you were able to navigate in order to open chests. But, while slightly different in concept, the recently released Street Fighter 6’s RPG-style World Tour mode has really expanded our horizon of what’s possible here. It’d be cool to see something even more in-depth like that.
We’re also secretly hoping some of the minigames from past titles have made a comeback. While we’d expect the thrust of NetherRealm’s focus to be on the core fighting, we wouldn’t say no to a spot of Motor Kombat or Puzzle Kombat, would you?
