Yesterday we reported on rumors that a new Nintendo Direct would drop sometime this week, and lo and behold, the leakers delivered the goods. There will indeed be a 40-minute Nintendo Direct tomorrow, June 21, which will focus on the company’s late-2023 lineup – you can get more details here.
So, now that we know a Nintendo Direct is definitely happening, speculation about what the company might show has reached a fever pitch. As we previously reported, there are rumors a fresh 2D Super Mario Bros. and a remake of an SNES classic may be in the works, and now we might just have more details about both of them.
First up, let’s talk about that SNES remake. While some have speculated it might be a new Chrono Trigger, the latest rumors point toward a different Square Enix classic – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Super Smash Bros. YouTuber PapaGenos, who has delivered accurate leaks on that game and things like the shadow launch of Metroid Prime Remastered, claims he received a message that a Super Mario RPG remake is in the works. Meanwhile, Pyoro ND, the insider who was the original source of the classic SNES remake rumor, also seems to be hinting at Super Mario RPG via some of their posts and likes.
Now, what about that 2D Mario game? According to Pyoro ND, it will not be another entry in the New Super Mario Bros. series. He also posted this emoji teaser for the 2D Mario game, which I’m not even going to try to interpret. Uh… Daisy is kidnapped by a purple elephant? Sure, yeah, that must be it.
