In celebration of its 15th year anniversary, Mojang Studios’ popular video game is officially receiving a CG-animated series adaptation at Netflix.
The project was revealed through a newly-released video, announcing the mega streamer’s partnership with Mojang Studios. Per Variety, the series is expected to “feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.” It is currently being developed with animation studio WildBrain, who previously worked with Netflix on shows such as Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego.

In addition to the animated Minecraft series, the best-selling game is also getting a live-action movie adaptation. Aquaman star Jason Momoa and Kung Fu Panda vet Jack Black are attached to lead the all-star cast. Joining them are Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker), Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Lisey’s Story), Emma Myers (Wednesday), Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), Kate McKinnon (Barbie), and Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows).
The film is being directed by Nacho Libre’s Jared Hess from a screenplay written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. It is produced by Mary Parent, Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui, and the late Jill Messick, with Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza, and Jonathan Spaihts serving as executive producers. Production on the highly-anticipated project had already wrapped last April.
The live-action Minecraft movie will debut in theaters on April 4, 2025.
