Metal Gear Solid 4, the masterful stealth action sequel, may finally lose its PlayStation exclusivity after more than 15 years. With Konami having just announced the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, leaked source code suggests that MGS4 will feature in the upcoming Vol. 2 alongside other titles from the franchise.
The leak comes via Metal Gear informant, Nitroid, who found that an interactive timeline posted on the official Metal Gear portal includes placeholder slots for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, as well as Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Grouping these games together seems like a pretty natural move for the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2 but what’s particularly interesting about this is that it will be the first instance MGS4 has appeared on a platform that isn’t Sony’s PlayStation 3. For more than 15 years, the game has remained a PS3 exclusive despite rumours of an Xbox port and continued calls for a modernised version on newer hardware.
Praised for its evolved stealth action gameplay and cinematic set pieces, we’re intrigued to see what changes Konami could make to MGS4 though it’s reported that all games featured in the upcoming collections will be straight-up ports as opposed to being fully remastered. Still, there’s hope we’ll see some quality of life improvements as well as other extra bells and whistles.
