Critical Role dungeon master Matt Mercer, who you may know as Cole Cassidy in Overwatch and Minsc in Baldur's Gate 3, has expressed interest in turning the hit Dungeons & Dragons actual play series into a video game.
Speaking to Dicebreaker, he said that "the leap into video games would be an incredible endeavor and would require the right idea, the right development studio, and the right budget."
I would love to see that in the future, should all those stars align!
While Critical Role hasn't had its own video game yet, it did step foot into the video game world back in 2018. Five years ago, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire launched a free Critical Role pack that included eight-player voice sets and character portraits based on their first campaign, Vox Machina.
That same campaign was also adapted as a TV show with resounding success. Both seasons have a 100 percent aggregate approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with over 90 percent from audiences. Perhaps a delve into gaming would see similar results, granted - as Mercer says - it's made under the right circumstances.
D&D has been at the forefront of gaming this year with the enormous success of Baldur's Gate 3 which is even in the running for Game of the Year. Larian Studios' long-awaited sequel to BioWare's Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn finally left early access in August, launching with the second and third acts on PC and, a month later, on PS5. Ever since, it has held a firm grip on the gaming zeitgeist.
Clearly, there's an appetite out there for character-driven party adventures with memorable casts, something Critical Role has built an audience on. You'll no doubt have heard of the stars making up its roster - Laura Bailey (The Last of Us Part 2),
