Marvel’s Avengers Revives Swimsuit Tradition With Sunny Days Outfits
It’s time for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to break out the beachwear, as summer is coming to in a big way. Black Widow, Thor, and Iron Man will get brand-new outfits over the next two weeks that are designed for the swimming pool more than the battlefield. Widow’s revealing two-piece ensemble will be in the game’s marketplace tomorrow, while Thor and Tony’s spiffy swim trunks will arrive in the coming weeks.
At first glance, it might seem out of character for heroes like Thor and Black Widow to take on the forces of AIM in their swimwear, but the newest outfits coming to still harken back to comic book history. Amidst the height of the comics boom in the 1990s, Marvel published an annual special issue dedicated to pin-ups of male and female heroes in revealing swimwear. Meant as a parody of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, the annual included fake interviews and advertisements alongside the saucy illustrations.
