In a turn of events, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD series is set to leave Netflix just one day before Marvel's Defenders departure from the streaming service. Premiering in September 2013, just one year after the release of the first groundbreaking Avengers film, the series featured a unique premise for the time, taking place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but choosing to focus on the smaller-scale agents of the espionage organization, SHIELD. The show was an overall success and went on to run for seven seasons, lasting from 2013 before its series finale in 2020.
Agents of SHIELD initiallyfollows Phil Coulson from the first Avengers film as he recruits a small team of elite agents to focus on a series of strange cases, also recruiting a recently discovered runaway and a genius hacker only known as Skye, later Daisy Johnson, and eventually Quake. While the Agents of SHIELD cast fluctuated over the years, some of the major players included Clark Gregg, Chloe Bennett, Ming-Na Wen, Ian De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, and Natalia Cordova-Buckley. With its strong uniqueness as a series, many of the show's main storylines were affected by the events of the MCU films, resulting in certain plot points seemingly appearing out of nowhere for viewers who were not familiar with the films.
