A handful of Marvel series are making the leap from Netflix to Disney+ on March 16.
By mid-month, shows like Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Punisher, and the ensemble series The Defenders will leave Netflix for Disney's streaming service, as will Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The move applies to Disney+ in the US, as well as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. Other Disney+ markets will get access to these series later in the year.
The additional content will be a boon for fans trying to watch all the Marvel content in order. A lot of it has been spread out across different streaming services thanks to licensing deals and other ownership issues. Spider-Man, for example, is owned by Sony; last year, Sony inked a deal that will see new Spidey releases stream on Disney+, but not until after they appear on Netflix. Meanwhile, Cloak & Dagger and Runaways remain on (Disney-owned) Hulu.
In a survey conducted just prior to the 2019 launch of Disney+, 60% said that Marvel and Star Wars content influenced their decision to sign up for Disney+, though 63% said they'd stick with Netflix if forced to choose between the two services. By the end of 2021, though, Disney had a promising 130 million subscribers to Netflix's 222 million.
Also starting on March 16, all Disney+ customers will see a prompt when they log in to update parental controls. "This includes the option to select content ratings restrictions for each profile as well as to add a PIN to lock profiles," Disney says. Those who choose to keep their settings the same will continue with a TV-14 content rating, the highest one available.
