Warning: this article contains SPOILERS for Severance.
One of the biggest mysteries in the Apple TV+ show Severance is what the numbers that the employees must sort mean, and fans have speculated a few theories based on the show's given clues. Set at the dystopian Lumon corporation,Adam Scott's Mark Scout is the department chief of Macrodata Refinement, which includes Helly R. (Britt Lower), Irving (John Turturro), and Dylan (Zach Cherry), known colloquially as «Refiners.» Macrodata Refinement is a confidential department in Lumon's basement. To further ensure confidentiality, the department's employees must go through the surgical process of "severance," in which a device implanted in the employee's brain separates memories to create an "innie" work self and "outie" personal self. While Lumon presents this procedure as a way for employees to secure top-secret data, it appears to be more of a control mechanism.
As another addition to Apple TV+'s growing roster of original content, Severance strikes a Gen Z nightmare andobserves the banal and even cult-like nature of corporate office life through a dark psychological thriller lens. While other media like Office Space, the comic strip Dilbert, and The Office all observe the corporate world in a similarly critical fashion, Severance exaggerates the mundane by offering its characters no answers to what they do at work. All they know about their job is that they must sort numbers that evoke an emotional reaction into folders. They meet quotas, they try to finish number files before they expire, and they receive rewards for reaching quotas that include erasers, finger traps, and waffle parties.
