Warning: contains spoilers for Action Comics #1042!
The Martian Manhunter’s role as the last survivor of Mars, just like his shape-shifting ability, makes him an iconic member of DC's Justice League. But all his powers pale in comparison to the one undisputed title he holds among the greatest heroes as the loneliest soul in the DC Universe.
Since his arrival on Earth, J'onn J'onzz has had a number of identities and personas, some of them more overtly heroic than others. Now, in the new ongoing story entitled “A Face in the Crowd” running as a backup in Action Comics, the Justice League icon Martian Manhunter is fighting a villain made specifically for him (and one who knows more than most about his past identities). Along the way, readers are given a clear reminder that Martian Manhunter’s many lives, memories, and identities also mean he suffers an isolated existence that even his most 'loner' colleagues can only dream of.

In the conclusion from Shawn Aldrige, Adriana Melo, Hi-Fi, and Dave Sharpe appearing in Action Comics #1042, “A Face in the Crowd” brings J'onn to the mysterious organization named Vulture, who are hellbent on destroying him. As the Martian Manhunter reconstitutes himself from a neural attack, he reflects on his life, not only on Mars, but on Earth as well. He realizes that on Earth, he lived many lives and never stayed long or developed bonds with anyone. Acknowledging that he was still chasing his life on Mars, he came to Metropolis to reorient himself and become “more connected to Earth.” Without his connection to Mars, he comes to understand, he is nothing but “a man made of ghosts and half-lived lives.”
