HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming documentary, Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, which focusses on the murder of Kim Wall while investigating a submarine. Wall was an investigative journalist who went missing in 2017 after boarding a homemade submarine made by Danish inventor, Peter Madsen. 11 days after she initially boarded vessel, parts of Wall's mutilated body were found, and a subsequent murder trial ensued.
Now, HBO has released a trailer of the two-part documentary that will premiere on March 8. The first part of the documentary, The Crime, follows the disappearance of Wall and the search to find her. The second part, The Punishment, will focus on the murder trial of "narcissistic psychopath" Peter Madsen. The Punishment will also discuss the media coverage of the trial, which included several instances of victim blaming against Wall. The documentary is being directed by Erin Lee Carr. Carr has directed several documentaries, including the critically acclaimed At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal. With her guidance in non-fiction storytelling, and a particularly gruesome murder at the center of the story, Undercurrent will likely be an intriguing watch. The true-crime documentary genre has exploded as of late, with HBO in particular producing several films and series. Whether this has saturated the market and made another true-crime investigation less appealing to viewers, or whether the infamous «submarine trial» as it's known in Denmark, will captivate both true crime aficionados and the general public will have to be seen on March 8
