Academy Award-winning actor J.K. Simmons was spotted on set in Glasgow reprising his role as Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon in the upcoming HBO Max Batgirl movie. Late last year, Simmons confirmed that Warner Bros. came back to him, wanting him to be Commissioner Gordon again and have it be a more significant role.
Simmons said he was shocked with his casting in Batgirl, undoubtedly because the last time he was seen as Commissioner Gordon was in Zack Snyder's Justice League with a role smaller than fans were expecting. And furthermore, after that, it seemed that Warner Bros. was shifting away from Snyder's vision, so Batman fans were glad to see Simmons back as Commissioner Gordon and finally see exactly what he could bring to the table.

In Batgirl set photos, courtesy of Daily Mail, fan-favorite Simmons was seen donning Commissioner Gordon's classic outfit of trench coat and black trilby hat. The scene being filmed seemed like a flashback sequence with a child actress who bore striking resemblance to Leslie Grace, suggesting she's playing a younger Barbara Gordon. Simmons was also seen in one photo with an actress who is presumably playing Barbara's mother.
With the return of Simmons, however, fans shouldn't necessarily expect a complete return to Snyder's initial vision of the DCEU. It's worth noting that Michael Keaton is returning as Batman inBatgirl, so fans should expect more than just another run-of-the-mill origin story. The rest of the plot details are kept under wraps and Warner Bros. refused to comment on Keaton's casting.
