Michael Keaton’s Batman will return to the big screen in The Flash and again in Batgirl, making a popular role for him far more likely. Thanks to graphic novels like Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and animated shows like Batman Beyond, there is considerable interest among Batman fans to see an older version of Bruce Wayne, either at the end of his superhero career or taking the role of mentor to his successor. With Keaton’s Batman set to become the DCEU’s Dark Knight, he’s in the ideal position to fill this role.
The Flash will take inspiration from the 2011 DC Comics crossover storyline, Flashpoint, and like its source material, will explore alternate timelines and universes, ending with a continuity shift for the main DCEU. The film will not only bring back Michael Keaton’s beloved version of the Dark Knight, but it will also include the final performance of Ben Affleck’s comic-accurate iteration of Batman. With Affleck exiting the DCEU and Michael Keaton set to appear in Batgirl, it’s clear that he’ll be the DCEU’s Batman after The Flash’s continuity reboot.

Set photos from the upcoming Batgirl film confirm that Keaton’s Batman will not only be well-integrated into the post-The Flash DCEU, but he’ll wear his famous black Batman costume as well. Keaton’s Batman appears to have some differences in the new DCEU, with his Robin appearing to be both alive (unlike Ben Affleck’s Robin) and being Dick Grayson instead of the Tim Burton universe’s Drake Winston. Keaton’s new role also allows him to take on a more Dark Knight Returns or Batman Beyond-like position within the rebooted continuity.
