Bilall Fallah, co-director of the upcoming Batgirl solo film, fans the flames of rumors surrounding the film’s inclusion of Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary. Following several small-screen iterations, and Alicia Silverstone’s Batgirl in Batman & Robin (1997), directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s (Bad Boys for Life) Batgirl will mark the first live-action movie focusing on the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, Barbara, who will be played by Leslie Grace. Filming for the project is currently underway with a script written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey).
In addition to Grace, Batgirl will feature the return of J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon from previous DC films. Following his role in the upcoming The Flash movie, Michael Keaton will also appear as Batman. DC Extended Universe newcomers include Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns, aka Firefly, a flamethrower-wielding serial arsonist who terrorizes Gotham City; Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh, Jacob Scipio, and Spencer Wilding. Batgirl will skip theaters and release on HBO Max as part of a new strategy from Warner Bros./DC films, which will also involve Jurnee Smollett’s Black Canary movie and the Michael B. Jordan-produced Val Zod series.
