Writer/director James Gunn explains the seemingly subtle change made to Drax the Destroyer’s backstory in the original Guardians of the Galaxy. Now the unofficial champion of oddball comic book characters thanks to DC projects like The Suicide Squad and HBO Max’s Peacemaker, Gunn is perhaps best known for introducing the Guardians to the MCU in 2014. One fan-favorite among the film’s titular, rag-tag group was the comically literal Drax (Dave Bautista).
Audiences were first introduced to the Kylosian when he was imprisoned with Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Rocket the Raccoon, Groot, and Gamora by the Nova Corps in the Kyln. It’s revealed that Thanos sent Ronan the Accuser to Kylos to eradicate half of its population, killing Drax’s wife and daughter. This prompts “the Destroyer”s vengeful rampage that lands him in the Kyln and unites him with the other Guardians. The MCU’s version of Drax deviates from the source material in one major way: his backstory. In the comics, Drax was born Arthur Sampson Douglas, a human from Burbank, California. While driving through the desert, Douglas and his family witnessed Thanos’ spaceship. Thanos destroyed their car, killing Douglas and his wife before kidnapping their daughter. Subsequently, Thanos’ father and grandfather took Douglas’ consciousnesses and placed it in an artificial body designed to combat the Mad Titan.
