Star Karen Gillan thinks The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special could be director/writer James Gunn's best work, and Gunn agrees. Both Gunn and Gillan joined the MCU in the 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite Gunn leaving Marvel briefly and focusing on the DCEU's The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, the two will return for Guardians of the GalaxyVol. 3 with Gunn as director and writer and Gillan as the cyborg Nebula. The rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast will also be returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which Gunn announced will be the trilogy's final installment.
Before GOTG Vol. 3 premieres, the Guardians will be returning for a different Marvel project. In 2020, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was announced as the MCU's first TV holiday special, with Gunn attached as writer and director. Few plot details about the special have been released, but during a previous interview with Screen Rant, Gillan stated that although she had not seen the Marvel special yet, it was "totally possible" that it was Gunn's best work.
