With Patch 10.1 now live, we want to highlight our guide to the new Item Upgrade system. This system has many nuances, but one of its best features is Flightstones and Crest discounts, making some upgrades nearly free. Item Upgrade System in Patch 10.1 and Season 2 Here are a couple of highlights from the guide:
Item Upgrade TracksWith this new system, each item you obtain will belong to a given track. This track limits how high you can upgrade a certain item, meaning you can no longer spam low keystone dungeons for items and upgrade them all the way to the max. The tracks are shown below.
Explorer — Item level 376 to 398 Adventurer — Item level 389 to 411 Veteran — Item level 402 to 424 Keystone +2 to +8 End of Dungeon Loot LFR Raid ItemsChampion — Item level 415 to 437
Keystone +9 to +16 End of Dungeon Loot Normal Raid ItemsHero — Item level 428 to 441
Keystone +17 to +20 End of Dungeon Loot Heroic Raid ItemsMythic Raid items can't be upgraded. With this, any item that drops on the Veteran track can be upgraded to 424, or any items on the Explorer track can be upgraded to 398.
Discounted UpgradesOnce you upgrade or obtain an item at a certain item level, any upgrades to other items to reach that item level for that given slot will have a discount. For instance, once you obtain a 434 chest piece, upgrading any other chest piece up to 434 will have discounts.
PvP Items don't count towards discounted upgrades for PvE items. Flightstones DiscountsFor a given slot, once you obtain gear of a certain item level, either from upgrading or from drops, all future upgrades will have a 60% discount on their Flightstone cost. This discount is account-wide. Rings and Trinkets require two of a certain item level to unlock
