Samsung is expected to launch its next-gen smartwatches next week, but could the company also announce a rugged, outdoors-focused smartwatch? Last month, Samsung confirmed that it would host its next Unpacked event on Aug. 10, where the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 smartphones. Alongside the two foldables, the company is also expected to announce the Galaxy Watch 5 lineup as an upgrade over the current Galaxy Watch 4-series, which includes the Watch 4 and the Watch 4 Classic.
According to multiple rumors over the past few months, the Galaxy Watch 5-series will come with a host of new features, including support for skin temperature measurement. The upcoming watches could also offer a massive battery upgrade over their predecessors to rectify complaints about the Galaxy Watch 4's poor battery life. However, rumors also suggest that the Galaxy Watch 5 series might deprecate a much-loved Galaxy Watch 4 feature. According to reports, there will be no rotating bezel in any of the Galaxy Watch 5 variants, and they will all reportedly feature touch-sensitive bezels instead.

In a press release, TaeJong Jay Yang, the EVP and Head of Health R&D Team at Mobile eXperience Business for Samsung Electronics. said that the company is working to offer more fitness and wellness-related features in its Galaxy smartwatches in the future. However, the one statement that stands out is regarding a watch for the outdoorsy types. According to Yang, the company will «continue expanding our Galaxy Watch lineup to better cater to the many unique needs of our users — especially those with a passion for the outdoors.»
