Aside from the Apple Watch, not many smartwatches capture mainsteam interest like the Samsung Galaxy Watch. So when Samsung announced its latest model, the Galaxy Watch 5, I was eager to get my hands on it.
Luckily, the stars aligned and the Galaxy Watch 5 arrived at my doorstep just hours after Samsung announced the watch (in other words, Samsung rush-shipped my review unit and UPS was on time). Rest assured, I plan to run down the battery to verify Samsung's claim that the Watch 5 lasts 50 hours on a charge (or 10 hours more than the Watch 4) and test all its new features including the infrared body temperature sensor, but I'll save all of that for my full review.
For now, come along as I unbox the Galaxy Watch 5 and detail my first impressions.
The Galaxy Watch 5 features a 40mm (small) or 44mm (large) aluminum case and starts at $279.99 for the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model or $329.99 for the LTE version. Both sizes are available in graphite (black) or silver, while the larger adds a sapphire (blue) option, and the smaller also comes in pink-gold.
Samsung sent me the 40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Watch 5 in silver with a Bora Purple Sports Band. I'm a lot happier with this color combination than I was with the basic black-on-black Watch 4 review unit I tested last year.
Note that the Watch 5 colors match Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 4 line, which is a nice touch.
In the box with the Watch 5, you get a quick start guide and a USB-C charger. You need to provide your own power adapter.
Happily, the watch arrives partially charged. A minute or so after attaching it to the charger, I glanced at the watch face and it was already 81% juiced up. From there, it took just four minutes to fully charge to 100%. Needless to say, the Watch 5
