Samsung's two new foldable phones look amazing and are packed with power, but for all their technical similarities on paper, they're very different beasts in everyday use. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is like a flip phone of old, snapping open into a conventional smartphone. The Galaxy Z Fold 4, meanwhile, is a clamshell that acts like a conventional smartphone when closed that unfolds into a tablet. Here's how the two phones compare.
This is obviously where the two phones differ the most. Both can serve as smartphones of roughly the same size, but the experience is decidedly unique to each form factor.
The Flip 4 starts as a tiny, pocketable square that doesn't do too much when it's closed. Unfolding the Flip 4 gives you access to its full smartphone powers.
The Fold 4 starts as a full smartphone with a solid screen, allowing you do do pretty much anything you want while its closed. Opening it up expands the screen size to something more akin to a tablet, which unlocks the Fold 4's productivity powers.
Form factor aside, the Flip 4 is a fashion-first phone, which is made all the more clear thanks to its accessories, color choices, and even name. The Flip 4 is available in blue, gold, gray, or purple, which are bolder options than the blakc, burgunday, gray-green, and beige (beige? really?) of the Fold 4. There's also the Flip 4 Bespoke Edition, which lets you mix and match different colors for the front panel, back panel, and frame. It adds an extra level of customization few other phones offer.
