Only yesterday, we reported about a disappointing update revolving around Apple’s decision to abandon solid-state buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in favor of physical ones. Fortunately, an update to that development is that the components are rumored to be ready, hinting that the previous information may not have been true.
On Twitter, @analyst941, the same individual who previously provided an iOS 17 features rundown, has updated below regarding the solid-state buttons for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, stating that these will arrive for the two flagships. According to him, Apple’s hardware team is working ‘too closely’ with this hardware to turn back now, meaning that the software team might also be busy programming various functions for these buttons.
The individual concludes Ming-Chi Kuo’s report as ‘nonsense,’ even though the TF International Securities analyst is known to be a reliable source concerning Apple’s future plans and product launches. Given the nature of the supply chain and technology industry as a whole, various rumors can disseminate in different directions, so Kuo likely reported on what his own sources must have informed him.
With the physical buttons replaced by solid-state ones, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are said to arrive with three Taptic Engine units, along with a low-power microprocessor that could carry out several functions. It is possible that during the WWDC keynote, Apple previews some functionality of these buttons when it provides a preview of iOS 17. From what we have heard, the buttons could be re-programmed by the user to perform a different task when pressed.
