While is absolutely a game where players can dress Nikki up in beautiful outfits, compete in styling competitions, and search out more clothing and accessories, there is so much more to it than its sparkly dresses. The fifth installment in the series, it expands on the lore of its universe while offering platforming, puzzle solving, combat, and, of course, beautiful outfits to dress up in. The fact that it has become known only as a «dress-up game» is disappointing to me, given the thought-provoking story the game developers have woven into the narrative through cutscenes and quests.
The following article contains minor spoilers for the story of .Althoughcertainly embraces its «girly game» aspects of dressing up in beautiful outfits and collecting as many accessories as possible,the story behind the magical world of Miraland that Nikki and Momo find themselves transported to is much more complex than just a game of styling clothes. Innocent people are falling into comas, wars and rumors of wars are circulating all around, and the god of the world, The Wishing One, may have even been killed by his helpers.
Beginners to the game may be expecting a simple, cozy dress-up game with bright colors, cute animals, and stunning style choices. This is all true, of course, as certainly manages to be a wonderfully cozy experience in its majestic world where outfits can hold magical abilities. Even within the story itself, Nikki's overarching objective in Miraland is to find the Miracle Outfits as she was directed, in order to save the world. This mission could have easily been considered to be simply a forced mechanic to let the dress-up make sense, but the developers expanded on the idea and the world in incredible ways.
A player could spend hours simply competing in styling challenges and designing outfit combinations and be perfectly happy doing so, but they would be missing out on the depth that comes from this game's story.
