In, players can recruit Hirelings to serve in their adventuring parties. These adventurers all met grisly fates at the hands of the Absolute, but their spirits are eager for revenge. Hirelings can serve as handy replacements for absent or dead companions, or as pure cannon fodder in high-stakes boss fights. Recruiting them is just a matter of spending Gold.
In a typical playthrough, you’ll usually want to fill your party with your companions, as these characters have their own storylines that tie back to the game’s main story arc. However, companions may leave or even die depending on the choices you make, breaking up your best party compositions. Hirelings are an efficient, low-stakes way to get your party back up to full strength.

To recruit a Hireling, return to your party camp and chat with Withers. As long as you have an open spot in your party, Withers will allow you to recruit one of twelve different Hirelings for a small fee of 100 Gold. Recruiting Withers is one of the first things you should do, as he also allows you to respec and change your class.
Withers can also change a companion’s class and respec them: an extremely useful mechanic for customizing your party even further.
Each of the Hirelings is a premade character with a different class, race, and background, but you can still use the Magic Mirror to change their appearance and customize their abilities.
