Blizzard Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated Diablo IV will be arriving on PC and current-gen consoles in 2023, with players now able to register for a chance at participating in closed beta tests. The eagerly anticipated next installment of the Diablo franchise took center stage at the Xbox and Bethesda game showcase earlier this week, with a new gameplay trailer revealing Diablo IV’s Necromancer class and its new 2023 release window.
Diablo IV will see players journeying through the dark fantasy world of Sanctuary once again, delving deep into dozens of procedurally generated dungeons and battling against hordes of demons and monsters. The game will feature different character classes for players to choose from and tell a new story revolving around the return of Lilith, the daughter of Diablo’s main antagonist Mephisto. The Diablo franchise has been rocked by controversy in recent years, particularly over the free-to-play game Diablo Immortal, designed primarily for mobile platforms. Fans vocally expressed their frustrations at Diablo Immortal’s announcement at BlizzCon 2018 and have since criticized the game for its microtransactions and grind following its launch.

However, Diablo IV has been met with a considerably more positive reception. Fans have praised the announcement that Diablo IV will explore Sanctuary’s darker side, with a more realistic and gruesome world and art style compared to Diablo III. With the possibility of Diablo returning to its dark fantasy roots, some players will be looking to return to Sanctuary as soon as possible by playing Blizzard’s planned closed beta tests.
