The long-in-development live-action Hot Wheels movie based on the famous Mattel toyline will be produced by Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams' production company. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report that the Warner Bros. Picture film is starting to take greater shape.
«As the global leader in car culture, Hot Wheels has been igniting the challenger spirit in auto enthusiasts for generations,» said Robbie Brenner, Mattel Films executive producer. «Fans of all ages are now in for the ride of their lives with the incredible talent of J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot joining us alongside Warner Bros. Pictures to transform Hot Wheels' legendary IP into a thrilling story for the big screen.»
In an earlier incarnation back in 2016, Fast and the Furious writer-director Justin Lin was attached to direct and produce the Hot Wheels movie. Now, as then, the plot for the project is unknown, but its logline reads: «The high-throttle action film will bring to life this beloved, multi-generational franchise and showcase some of the world's hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks, and motorcycles.»
Also, it's worth noting that since 2016 the «movie based on a toy» genre has increasingly become both more viable and also more crowded. A movie based on Monopoly reportedly starring Kevin Hart is still coming after nearly a decade of development, joined by other films based on the humble Slinky, Rubik's Cube, and even Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. Mattel also has a Barbie movie due out in 2023, which stars Margoe Robbie and is directed by Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the script with Noah Baumbach.
