The theatrical rerelease date for Cliver Barker’s has been announced. Newly remastered in 4K, the 1987 supernatural horror served as Barker’s feature directorial debut.
The cult classic immediately established Barker as one of the horror legends in cinema history. It spawned ten more installments helmed by different directors, including 1988’s Hellbound, 1992’s Hell on Earth, 1996’s Bloodline, 2000’s Inferno, 2002’s Hellseeker, 2005’s Deader, 2005’s Hellword, 2011’s Revelations, and 2018’s Judgement.
The most recent Hellraiser feature released in 2022.
For the first time in 37 years, Fathom Entertainment will bring a newly remastered 1987’s Hellraiser to US theaters on February 5 and 6, 2025. The film is based on Barker’s 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, which centers on a puzzle box that summons supernatural and gruesome beings called the Cenobites.
The 1987 film followed Frank, a hedonistic man who opens a mysterious portal to hell in an attempt to find an extraordinary sexual pleasure. This leads to Frank having his whole body torn apart. When his brother moves into his old house together with his wife, the wife — still in love with Frank — agrees to lure men in order to use their blood and regenerate his body.
The film starred Doug Bradley as the leader of the Cenobites. Also called Pinhead, Bradley went on to reprise the role in the following seven installments before passing on the mantle to Stephan Smith Collins, Paul T. Taylor, and Jamie Clayton.
The 1987 Hellraiser also starred Sean Chapman as Frank, Andrew Robinson as Larry, Clare Higgins as Julia, Ashley Laurence as Kirsty, and Oliver Smith as Skinless Frank. The other cenobites were portrayed by Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, and Grace Kirby.
Hellraiser returns to theaters (in 4K, no less) on February 5 and 6.
