Microsoft never released Andromeda, the Windows-based operating system designed specifically for dual-screen devices, but that hasn't stopped Windows Central from exploring the software running on a Lumia 950 smartphone in a new hands-on video.
The experiment includes a few caveats. Windows Central notes that Andromeda was never intended to run on the Lumia 950, which was released in 2015, and the video features a pre-release build of the operating system from 2018. So there's bound to be some oddities.
It seems that Andromeda was built around stylus input—it offered access to a digital notebook straight from the lock screen—and gesture-based controls within apps. Windows Central says it couldn't show a feature called Continuum that offered a full Windows experience, however.
Microsoft ultimately decided to switch to Android when it released the Surface Duo in 2020, and it stuck with Google's operating system for the Surface Duo 2. But the video still offers an in-depth look at what the company had planned for dual-screened devices in 2018.
