The technical test for Hades 2 has given us a few hints about what happened to Zagreus, Hades, and Persephone in the time between the first game and the second.
One of the coolest things about Hades 2 is that it gives us a brand-new protagonist to play as - Melinoe, the princess of the Underworld and the daughter of Hades. As awesome as Melinoe and her unique playstyle are, that hasn't stopped fans from collectively being worried about the fate of everyone's favourite character - Zagreus.
Ever since the reveal trailer for Hades 2 showed a different child of Hades as the central character, fans have been wondering what could have happened to put Zagreus out of commission and for him to not be the one chasing down his dad again. Although we still don't really know the specifics, the technical test has given us a very good idea of what's happened.
Although the Technical Test for Hades 2 only lets players experience a fraction of what the Early Access release will have in store, it does still set up the game's story nicely and highlights why Melinoe is the main character. After you die for the first time and get sent to The Crossroads, the new hub for the game, Melinoe can interact with a special painting inside a tent.
That painting shows Hades, Persephone, and an older Zagreus holding baby Melinoe, which gives us our first look at Zagreus' updated design for Hades 2 (although it's likely to change again since that painting was done while she was a baby). Zag looks much like he did in the last game, but is noticeably taller than he once was.
Although Zagreus hasn't shown up in Hades 2 so far, I'm betting that Melinoe will have to fight him at some point and that he'll eventually be added to the Crossroads once you've beaten the game enough times.
A new look at Zagreus isn't the only thing the painting reveals, however. When interacting with it, a caption will pop up that hints at what has happened to Melinoe's family. One variant of it reads, "The titan
