Every so often our beloved medium throws up a game that becomes something else, something greater. Unbounded by platform or even generation, such a game will go on to be perennially popular, played and adored by millions of players around the world, and exhibiting incredible longevity.
Such games are few and far between, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the developers and publishers behind them are always hoping for such mighty success. In a recent thread on ResetEra, someone drew attention to these "cross generational" games, selecting a shortlist for members to vote on which they considered the most impressive.

The OP chose five games with another option being "Other". These were Minecraft, GTA 5, Skyrim, Mario Kart 8, and Counter-Strike. "I think these are the 5 most impressive cross-generational games ever made", the OP wrote, in their introduction to the ballot. "Each one can put up a very impressive stat", they continued.
They mention that Counter-Strike is nearly 25 years old; that Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time and remains as relevant now as when it came out in 2011. Meanwhile, Mario Kart 8/Deluxe has sold more than 60 million copies across two systems and is still being bought in significant numbers as it continues to be well supported with DLC. Skyrim has sold huge numbers across three console generations, receiving numerous ports as well as being remastered, not to mention having a very active mod community. Finally, GTA 5's continued reach across platforms has become something of a running joke in the community.
