A Game of Thrones MMORPG is reportedly in development, handled by Korean publisher Nexon. The game is said to take place midway through the TV show, between Seasons 4 and 5, and will focus on the North and the Wall.
This is according to a report from Redanian Intelligence (as spotted by Eurogamer), a news site with a focus on The Witcher, Game of Thrones, and other fantasy media. The site claims that players will meet characters like Roose Bolton, Jon Snow, and Sam Tarly as part of the Northern storyline, but the original cast from the HBO show will not reprise their roles.
As for the player character, right now the only choice the report mentions is that we can play as a man or a woman. The option we don't choose will still be a character in the story, just not controlled by us. And while the game is said to have a story mode, it will be online too, suggesting we'll interact with other players.
While the North is the only part of the seven kingdoms mentioned here, Redanian Intelligence adds that this doesn't mean the others won't be in the game. So, we might be able to pledge our allegiances to the houses in the South too, since there was conflict throughout Westeros at this point in the show.
No other kingdoms are mentioned, but it would be strange for a Game of Thrones MMO to not include iconic areas like Kings Landing, or feature fan favourite character, Daenerys. With that said, the latter will still be in Essos at this point in the story, so if she's included in the main narrative, that would be a huge map for the developers to create.
There's no mention of how the choices we make will affect the overall story, but who knows? Maybe we'll be able to off the main characters and make our own ending.
Game of Thrones has received video game spin-offs before, but none have been overwhelming successes. Two games were cancelled; the second season of the Game of Thrones Telltale series, and another MMORPG called Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms.
