With the announcement of Diablo 4's first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, we've gotten our first, early look at Mercenaries. Similar to Followers in Diablo 3, players will be able to enlist Mercenaries who will follow them around and assist in a number of ways.
Judging by this first image alone, it appears the Mercenaries will fall into one of four different archetypes. Each will have unique abilities and skill trees that will develop as these powerful allies progress alongside you. Those archetypes will likely include the following:
- The tank-like Mercenary in the center stands proud among the four with a tall shield in hand that appears eerily similar to Diablo 2's Tower Shield. We'll have to wait and see what his Unique ability is and whether or not he can heal or just tank stand-in and take damage.
- The bearded Mercenary dressed in green far-left holds a bow and arrow and is likely our ranged archer. Diablo 3's Scoundrel Follower was able to CC enemies with blinding powder, so it is likely this Unique ability will do something similar.
- The shortest of the four with horns, reptilian tail, and hooves holds fire in its hand and is likely our ranged magic caster. This Mercenary likely has some connection to the Mage Clans.
- The other horned Mercenary standing far-right who's covered in blue tattoos and is holding a one-hand weapon in each hand appears to be a berserker Mercenary.
Is it not better to wander with a friend by your side? Never fight alone as Mercenaries can join you on your quest to battle side by side with you in the dense undergrowth of Nahantu and beyond. These powerful allies grow in power as they progress, and each are equipped with unique abilities to help you in combat.
It's anyone's guess how these individuals will fit into the Vessel of Hatred storyline and what tribes they represent, but it is exciting to think of how each of these new characters will build upon the world. Let us know in the comments what Unique Abilities each of these
