While may still only be available for PlayStation 5 at the time of writing, according to producer Naoki Yoshida the game could land up on other consoles after it launches on PC. Square Enix's exclusivity deal with Sony has long frustrated fans who may have elected to settle down with Xbox hardware but based on current developments, Microsoft's console may soon be home to some of the most recent entries in the franchise. The word's still on the Remake Trilogy, but the story could be very different for the sixteenth game.
Speaking to Noisy Pixel, Yoshida commented that once the development team is finished porting to PC, they will be "." While Xbox isn't mentioned by name, it's the only other piece of hardware the veteran developer could be alluding to given that the Nintendo Switch doesn't have the power to run without some series downgrades to the graphics. Yoshida goes on to say that the undertaking to bring the game to other platforms will also allow the studio to come to terms with the project's conclusion.
Sony's exclusivity deal with Square Enix has seen the most recent games blocked from launching on Xbox but the winds may be changing. Microsoft recently welcomed the ever-popular MMO onto its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, marking the first time the game has been available on the platform. Older games are also compatible with Xbox but it remains to be seen whether the sixteenth title and and ever abandon their console exclusivity roots.
While many critics may have praised for its thrilling combat and dense world, the community was less sold on the game. A common complaint is that while battles are indeed action-packed and visceral, switching to a more action-orientated system instead of turn-based mechanics robbed the experience of a core pillar. Additionally, the story was widely criticized for its poor pacing and awkward dialogue.
