Final Fantasy 10 remains one of the most believed entries into Square Enix’s long-running RPG franchise. Its HD remaster, on the other hand, was universally panned as one of the worst ever done up until the GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition. And even almost 10 years later, fans still just can’t let it go.
Released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 (and then later on the PS5, PC, and for Switch and Xbox One in 2019), the HD remaster updated Final Fantasy 10's graphics to run at 1080p, but also redid the lighting, added new high-def textures, and updated the character models and animation. At the time, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster was billed as one of the most extensive remasters ever, but fans had nothing but criticism when it actually arrived.

A new thread from Twitter user @StellaNoxEclair showcases one of the worst problems between the original version of FF10 and the HD remaster. Somehow, facial animations often became less expressive in the HD remaster. Sometimes, the expressions even changed outright--you can see Tidus went from a deep frown to an almost nervous smile in Stella's post, while Yuna goes from angry to astonished.
Head over to a post on ResetEra, though, and you'll see things got way worse than just some bizarrely-changed expressions. Sometimes, the HD textures didn't even look like they belonged to the character they were applied to. Some textures clipped, making Tidus' eyes look strange or making his teeth disappear. And an older thread from 2020 showcases how the lighting changes often made it so models were either fully lit or fully dark, with very little in between.
