A number of Sea of Thieves fans believe the latest tweet from the game’s official X account is hinting at upcoming PlayStation and Switch ports.
The message, which is based on the traditional Valentine’s Day “roses are red, violets are blue” rhyme, is being interpreted as a tease relating to rumours that Microsoft plans to bring the game to Sony and Nintendo‘s consoles.
It reads: “Rowboats are red, and sometimes they’re blue, other times they’re green, occasionally they can be white… wait, where we we going with this?”
It’s generally agreed that Xbox is associated with green, Nintendo with red and PlayStation with blue, while white is sometimes attributed to the ‘neutral’ PC format (or could be a reference to the Epic Games Store).
Numerous replies to the tweet suggest it’s a reference to recent reports that Sea of Thieves is one of a number of Xbox games that could be coming to PlayStation and Nintendo systems.
“Switch is red, PlayStation is blue, one of these platforms you are going to,” replied one X user.
“Nintendo is red, PlayStation blue, Xbox is green, please say it’s not true,” wrote another less optimistic follower.
Last month, the Nate the Hate podcast said Microsoft was planning to bring one of its “more acclaimed” first-party games to competing platforms this year.
Responding to this claim, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb said Rare’s Sea of Thieves could be set to make the jump to Sony’s and Nintendo’s consoles.
“Sea of Thieves, I’ll say I’ve heard that that was one that might be coming to other platforms,” he said at the time. “When I first started hearing these rumours, I was like, this is probably about Sea of Thieves, because I’ve heard that could come to Switch and PlayStation.”
In his industry newsletter Game File, former Kotaku editor and Axios reporter Stephen Totiloalso said last month that he’d been told by a source that Microsoft has considered bringing Sea of Thieves to PlayStation, possibly for an early 2024 release.
