Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment is seemingly working on a «cross-platform RPG» built using Unreal Engine. Obsidian Entertainment was founded over 20 years ago and has gone on to develop some of the most popular and iconic RPGs of all time. Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and since then, the studio has continued to release critically-acclaimed work.
Obsidian's first Xbox-published game was the survival game Grounded, a title that combines typical survival game elements with a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids premise. Grounded was followed up by the narrative-driven RPG Pentiment, which released to rave reviews in 2022. Action-RPG Avowed is next up for Obsidian, with the highly-anticipated game expected to launch later this year for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
With Obsidian owned by Xbox, it makes sense for its games to be released as Xbox console exclusives, which is seemingly the plan with Avowed. However, a future Obsidian RPG could be a multi-platform release, opening the door for it possibly appearing on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles as well. Xbox recently started experimenting with bringing its first-party games to competing consoles. It picked four games to start with, two of which were Obsidian titles. Both Grounded and Pentiment have been released for PS4, PS5, and Switch, and so it stands to reason that future Obsidian games will make the jump as well, though it's unclear if they will be multi-platform at launch or if some time will pass before they eventually come to competing consoles.
