The Multiverse has become such an overwhelming presence in Marvel storylines that even the Avengers are sick of it. As the Earth's Mightiest Heroes are now at the center of a huge Multiverse-based storyline, they express their frustration over how pointless this endless hopping through different realities actually seems.
The Multiverse has been the focus of the Avengers' storylines since the Earth's Mightiest Heroes found themselves at the center of the machinations of Mephisto, his Council of Reds, and the Multiversal Masters of Evil led by Doom Supreme. These villains plan to conquer every Earth in the Multiverse by traveling back in time and killing the first version of the planet's defenders, the Prehistoric Avengers. While this is the overarching plot, much focus has been devoted to exploring these different versions of Earths, each with its own unique features and characters. Meanwhile, the Avengers are chasing Mephisto, still unaware of his master plan but trying to protect their «ancestors» throughout history.

In Avengers #58 by Jason Aaron, Javier Garròn, and David Curiel, the team's frustration over this multi-dimensional goose chase becomes evident. The team has traveled back in time to Edo-era Japan to save the Ghost Ronin, a samurai version of Ghost Rider, from Mephisto's minions, but the Spirit of Vengeance does not need their help at all. Iron Man points out that the Avengers are not supposed to be there at all, as it was never the plan to use their Celestial technology to travel back to this time.
