The Punisher's new era takes a horrifically dark turn as his new allies betray him in the worst possible way. Frank Castle may be a ruthless killer and a remorseless murderer of hundreds of criminals, but he is also motivated by the tragic murders of his wife and children. In Punisher #4, the mysterious Hand has finally revealed their true colors, and a furious Frank Castle might just ally with one of his most monstrous foes yet: Ares, the Greek God of War.
Frank Castle has mourned the deaths of his family for years — so when the High Priestess of the Hand manages to resurrect his wife, he feels the need to enter into her service as the High Slayer to keep Maria Castle alive. Now with dozens of ninjas under his command, the Punisher has access to vast resources, a tremendous amount of money, and more weapons than he can possibly wield. His new and terrifying enemies are the Apostles: arms dealers equipped with Hoplite helmets who sell weapons with a religious zeal. They are also servants of Ares, who seeks to propagate war across the Earth (and even punishes a messenger for even mentioning the word «peace», which he despises).

In Punisher #4, written by Jason Aaron with art by Jesus Saiz & Paul Azaceta, the High Priestess brings two ninjas before Castle; they have committed the unforgivable sin of surviving a battle and bowing to Ares (under threat of execution). Instead of killing the Hand soldiers, the Punisher spares them, believing the Hand needs all the soldiers it can muster in their fight. The next day, the High Priestess brings the two ninjas to Castle again, claiming they are now fully loyal
