Warning: contains spoilers for Captain America/Iron Man #5!
Pioneer might be one of the weirdest characters in the Marvel Universe, and no one really seems to know how her powers work. In the Captain America/Iron Man mini-series, the two heroes have been working with the Paladins on tracking one of their own, the mysterious 51. In issue five, on sale now in print and digital, readers see the team, including Pioneer, in action—but no one is sure what exactly her powers are.
Pioneer first appeared in Marvel Zombies Supreme #2 by Frank Marafino and Fernando Blanco, as part of the Fifty-State Initiative, created in the wake of the Superhero Registration Act. Pioneer helped stop Hyperion, who contracted a zombie virus by eating infected cows, by tapping into the “Power of the Plains,” and reanimated corpses to throw at him. This power also gave her a heightened sense of smell. The character would not appear again until this year’s Captain America/Iron Man mini-series, where she and other former member of the now-defunct Initiative formed a new team, the Paladins. The team got a quick baptism of fire as one of their members, the alien 51, seemingly went rogue, allying himself with former Head of HYDRA Veronica Eden. However, Iron Man and Captain America soon learned the Paladins, including Pioneer, were not on the level, using the situation for more sinister purposes, namely destroying the super computer Overseer as well as 51. Now the final battle is on, and Pioneer finds herself in the fray. The issue is written by Derek Landy, illustrated by Angel Unzueta, colored by Rachelle Rosenberg and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
