Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey!
One of the worst Avengers in the team’s history left a huge impact on Monica Rambeau, the second Captain Marvel in Marvel Comics. Rambeau was at one time the team’s chair, and in Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey, on sale now in print and digital, she reflects back on that period, and the negative impact Doctor Druid had on her—and how instrumental it was for her future as a hero.
The second person to hold the title of Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau first appeared in 1982’s The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 from Roger Stern, John Romita Jr., Stan Goldberg, and Jim Novak. After being exposed to extra-dimensional energy, Rambeau gained the ability to manipulate all forms of energy on the electromagnetic spectrum. She would soon join the Avengers, ultimately working her way to Chair. One of her teammates was Doctor Druid, a telepath who, in a bid to become team leader, used his abilities to undermine Monica’s authority. The fallout from the event left Monica broken, and led to her departure from the Avengers. In the years since, Monica has adopted a number of heroic aliases, including Spectrum, her current identity; she was also a member of the team Nextwave. Monica has done well for herself in the years since leaving the Avengers, but the memory of Doctor Druid continues to haunt her, as seen in Amazing Spider-Man #92.Bey, written by Jed MacKay, Cody Ziglar and Zeb Wells, illustrated by Luigi Zagaria, Bruno Oliveira, Fran Galan, Mark Bagley and Wayne Faucher, colored by Espen Grundetjern, Carlos Lopez, Jim Campbell, Jim Charalampidis and Morry Hollowell and lettered by Joe Caramagna.
