The MCU's Phase 5 has the potential to dive into many unexplored sides of the Marvel universe on the big screen, but it could also pay off an original Guardians of the Galaxy plan. The last film in Phase 2 before Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy was the definitive proof that the MCU had grown successful enough to create a live-action adaptation of any character or group from the Marvel comics. Despite dealing with characters that possessed limited popularity from Marvel comics, Guardians of the Galaxy claimed an impressive $772 million at the box office and went on to become one of the most important sub-franchises within the MCU.
The success of Guardians of the Galaxy would naturally lead to a sequel in the form of 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The MCU's most unconventional interstellar heroes went on to make telling contributions to both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame infilms that marked the Guardians' first time interacting with the MCU Avengers. The Guardians will return to the big screen in Thor: Love and Thunder in a continuation of Endgame's setup, and a third Guardians of the Galaxy film is slated for a 2023 release date.

While it is now hard to imagine a Guardians of the Galaxy movie without Peter Quill, Marvel's original plans for the film involved having a version of Nova, the hero member of the Nova Corps, as the main character.
