People have been thirsting over FromSoftware characters for years, but we rarely see the developer or publisher get in on the action. Today is a very different day.
Bandai Namco told Elden Ring fans on Twitter to "Treat yourself to 18 inches of Messmer the Impaler" in an advertisement for the new Shadow of the Erdtree collector's edition. Not what I thought he was going to be impaling, frankly.
I'll admit, FromSoftware bosses can sometimes feel like an 18-inch battering, but it's gonna take more than empty promises to get me to splash out £224.99, Bandai. Then again, a lot of people seem sold on that tease.
"I can handle Messmer, not in a fight mind you but you know," Endymion replied.
"You're damn right I'm gonna be treating myself to all of that, even got an extra just in case," @MythyMoo said.
They know what they're doing with this one. Finger but whole.
"I already have it ordered!" @SweetPeachGames said. "I've never been so excited to receive 18 inches."
"You are a fake fan if you don't line up to receive the 18 inches [by the way]," @AesirAesthetics said.
On a crisp Autumn morning in September, the PlayStation UK community manager flipped open their laptop and opened Twitter, unknowingly about to change marketing history.
They grabbed the Spider-Man 2 Collector's Edition promo art, typed up the pre-order link, and on a whim, added a cheeky little tagline, "Treat yourself to 19 inches of Venom".
It quickly went viral, plastering all 19 inches of our favourite symbiote-addled monster across our for you pages. Which, for the record, is one inch bigger than Messmer. But it's not about the size, it's about how you use it. Of course, I mean the statue, not---anyway.
Alternatively, if getting impaled isn't your speed, you can grab hold of Messmer's helmet for $190.
