Wizards of the Coast has released a new Unearthed Arcana article for Dungeons & Dragons which adds giant and elemental-themed subclasses and feats to the game. D&D 5e has ensured that the playable races are either Small or Medium-sized creatures, with the ability to become larger or smaller creatures tied to magical spells from D&D's Transmutation school of magic, or through special abilities granted by a class.
The older editions of D&D allowed for Large-sized creatures, such as the half-ogre in Dungeons & Dragons 3e, but these tended to cause issues when used in games. The average game world is designed around Medium-sized creatures, so having a giant humanoid wandering around meant that the DM had to accommodate for their movement when writing the campaign. As such, D&D 5e has scrapped Large-sized playable races, with creatures like centaurs, firbolgs, and goliaths all being Medium-sized creatures.
